Hull

Both the hull and the deck is made of aluminium. Aluminum is strong and forgiving. Where an impact on a fiberglass hull will result in major gelcoat damage and possible cracking, an aluminum hull will probably only have a scratch or a small bend. The only concern is electrolysis. Ensure that you have proper sacrificial anodes installed. Finally, aluminium is not prone to osmosis.

The hull has chines which can provide increased initial stability. This means that the boat will resist rolling side to side, especially when at rest or cruising at slower speed. The chines can also help spray outwards keeping the deck drier when underway.

Interior

The boat is equipped with 2 cabins, 4+3 berths, a galley, 400 liters (105 US gallons, 87 imperial gallons) fresh water capacity, toilet facility and 40 liters (10 US gallons, 8 imperial gallons) waste water capacity.

The headroom is above average

Note: the boat has also been sold to be home-completed, which means that the quality of each boat may vary.

Rig

The Reinke S11 is built with a masthead rig. The sail area for the mailsail + jib is 60.0 m2 (645.8 ft2). The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

Keel

The Reinke S11 has been built with different keel alternatives.

Bilge keel

One option is a bilge keel. A bilge keel is a twin keel, which allows the boat to be beached. Bilge keels are the most popular keel for tidal waters.

Reinke S11 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.30 - 1.40 meter (4.27 - 4.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Fin keel

Another option is a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.60 - 1.70 meter (5.25 - 5.55 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Engine

The fuel tank has a capacity of 35 liters (9 US gallons, 7 imperial gallons).

The boat may be equipped with an inboard Mitsubishi M4.17 diesel engine at 42 hp (31 kW). Cruise speed is 5.0 knots. Max speed is 7.0 knots.

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

Stability and Safety

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Reinke S11 is 1.66, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

EU classification

Reinke S11 holds a CE certification:

The boat is by European Union certified as Class A. OCEAN:
Designed for extended voyages where conditions may exceed wind force 8 (Beaufort scale) and significant wave heights of 4 m and above but excluding abnormal conditions, and vessels largely self-sufficient.

Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.7 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

Immersion rate

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Reinke S11 is about 233 kg/cm, alternatively 1310 lbs/inch.
Meaning: if you load 233 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1310 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Motion Comfort Ratio

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

The Motion Comfort Ratio for Reinke S11 is 36.9.

Low High 86% 0 50 100
Comparing this ratio with similar sailboats show that it is more comfortable than 86% of all similar sailboat designs. This is a comfort value significantly above average.

L/B (Length Beam Ratio)

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

The l/b ratio for Reinke S11 is 3.32.

Wide Slim 54% 0 50 100
Compared with other similar sailboats it is slimmer than 54% of all other designs. It seems that the designer has chosen a slightly more speedy hull design.

Ballast Ratio

What is a Ballast Ratio?

The ballast ratio for Reinke S11 is 41%.

Low High 58% 0 50 100
This ballast ratio is higher than 58% of all similar sailboat designs. Since the ballast ratio and the righting moment (i.e. better ability to resist heeling) is strongly correlated, a ballast ratio just above average indicates an ability to resist heeling above average.

D/L (Displacement Length Ratio)

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

The DL-ratio for Reinke S11 is 274 which categorizes this boat among 'light crusers & offshore racers'.

Heavy Light 42% 0 50 100
42% of all similar sailboat designs are categorized as heavier. A heavy displacement combined with smaller water plane area has lower acceleration and is more comfortable.

Maintenance

Bottom Paint

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 36m2 (387 ft2).
Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Note: If you use a paint roller you will need more paint than if you use a paintbrush.

Rig

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.
