Review of Friendship 33

Both the hull and the deck is made of fibreglass. A hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 2 cabins, 7 berths, 200 liters (52 US gallons, 43 imperial gallons) fresh water capacity and toilet facility.

The Friendship 33 is built with a fractional rig. The sail area for the mailsail + jib is 51.3 m² (552.2 ft²). A fractional rig has smaller headsails which make tacking easier, which is an advantage for cruisers and racers, of course. The downside is that having the wind from behind often requires a gennaker or a spinnaker for optimal speed.

The Friendship 33 has been built with different keel alternatives.

Fin keel

One option is a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.75 - 1.85 meter (5.74 - 6.04 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Fin keel

Another option is a fin keel.

Friendship 33 can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.30 - 1.40 meter (4.27 - 4.57 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Wing keel

Yet another option is a wing keel keel. But be aware that even though a Wing Keel keel is very good for speed racing, a fishing nets and the like in the water can easily make you into a troublesome situation.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.10 - 1.20 meter (3.61 - 3.91 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Stub/CentreBoard

Yet another option is a stub/centreboard keel. A stub/centerboard keel is a fixed stub keel with a retractable centerboard, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.12 - 1.22 meter (3.67 - 3.97 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 50 liters (13 US gallons, 10 imperial gallons).

The Friendship 33 has been equipped with different engine alternatives.

Alternative 1:

Friendship 33 may be equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta diesel engine at 29 hp (21 kW). Calculated max speed is about 6.9 knots

The transmission is a saildrive.

Alternative 2:

The boat may be equipped with an inboard diesel engine at 18 hp (13 kW). Calculated max speed is about 5.4 knots

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster.
